Holdings:

The Virginia Court made the following holding:

  • Jurisdiction in divorce suits is purely statutory. As such, it cannot be acquired by the court inferentially or through indirection. The legislature confers jurisdiction on the trial court to resolve divorce and related issues in specific, detailed language.
  • In a divorce action, a trial court is authorized to order monetary payments or awards only in the form of spousal support under Va. Code Ann. §§ 20-107.1 and 20-109, child support under §§ 20-107.2 and 108, or monetary awards made pursuant to § 20-107.3.
